LEADER LETTER

Dear SKCEE Families,

Happy New Year!

I hope you had a fun-filled winter break. We are so happy to see the students and you all again. We had a great first week back, which culminated with the Fashion Show today in the auditorium. It was a joyful and adorable event! Thanks to those of you who joined us, and special thanks to our Specials team, Cookie Caskie, Sara Whatmore, and Kelly Kurtz for making it happen!

DPS School Choice window opens on January 15th. All students entering Kindergarten, ECE 4, or ECE 3 need to participate, (even current SKCEE students!). You can learn more at this link

On Friday, January 17th, we will be providing technology and translation (Arabic and Spanish) support for families needing assistance with the process at 8:30 and again at 2:00. Sign in at the front office, and we will send you to the space where we are holding the event.

Some of you were alarmed, and most were curious, when you got the “Licensing is Here” message on Reachwell Wednesday. We have a way to communicate internally with our staff using Reachwell, but the wrong button was clicked, and you all were made aware of accidentally. I have great news about the monthly visit: we received ZERO violations!

We will be completing our monthly fire drill and our required second semester lockdown drill on Tuesday, January 14th in the morning. The children are accustomed to fire drills, but the lockdown may be new, or different for them. Please know we inform the children that we are practicing to keep ourselves and our school safe, but we do not go in depth about why we need to be prepared for a lockdown emergency. Students will hear “locks, lights, out of sight” on the school speaker, and adults take them to their designated safe space within the classrooms. The DPS Safety officer and I walk the building checking that doors are locked and peeking in windows. After the protocol we share feedback with the adults if we need to make any adjustments to the process. While the thought of the tragedies that require us to practice this protocol break my heart, and cause a multitude of emotions for staff, families, and some students, please know we train for emergencies, and all SKCEE staff are First Aid and CPR certified, which is unique to a school. Our first priority is student safety, and this helps us keep our community safe.

Have a great month, and, as always, thank you for your partnership and support.

With Love,

Principal Shelley Boberschmidt
