LEADER LETTER
Dear SKCEE Families, We missed our Butterflies today, but did some awesome playing and learning together as your SKCEE staff. We also completed our portfolio for NAEYC accreditation so we are ready to apply when eligible. We hope you had a fun day with your kids too!

May is always an exciting, celebratory time in schools. It can also be difficult for some children as they sense a change in the energy of the season in school, and some know they will be leaving SKCEE for the summer, or even forever. To support your children, we commit to both celebrating the learning we’ve all done, and the community we’ve created, and also finishing strong and keeping things structured and predictable for our little learners as they finish this year with us.

We are excited to celebrate all of our SKCEE educators next week from May 5-May 9 during National Teacher Appreciation Week. The PTA has some wonderful things planned to express gratitude to our staff, and we hope you will join us in thanking our dedicated staff for all they do for our Butterflies. Here is a link to a staff roster for your use if you’d like to join us in showering them with love.

There will be multiple opportunities for you to engage as families at SKCEE this month to celebrate with us. All of these events are invitations, not obligations, so please don’t feel you need to be at all the events. We know scheduling can be hard for working families, but want you to know you are welcome!

The first May event is National Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 7th. We hope to see many of you with your yellow tees and helmets pedaling to school on Wednesday. On Thursday, May 15th, we will have our Spring Fling Celebration of Learning. Families will spend time in student classrooms, playing with your children, and then head outdoors for a PTA sponsored community event with music, face painting, pizza, and more. See the flyer linked here. On Friday, March 16th, we have Field Day! See links in the PE section below for more information. We will have our end of the year celebrations for ECE on Friday, May 30th from 2:30-3:00, also more details to come.

If you are returning to SKCEE, PLEASE complete this Family Input Survey to help us in planning for the 25-26 school year. Early Bird Online Registration opens Monday, May 5th. For more information, click here.

Finally, kudos to the ten family members who completed Mr. Derek’s inaugural course of Raising Highly Capable Kids! We hope to offer even more sessions in the coming school year. Congratulations to Danna Jiang, Laura Boschini, Hafez Bazrafshan, Soumya Black, Donald Hume, Michelle Rabold, Jordan Rabold, Leah Brite, Kalvin Brite, and Maureen Reid (pictured), and Jessica Johnston, David Johnston, Chelsey Hume, and Annie Croner (not pictured).

With Love,

Principal Shelley Boberschmidt

We will celebrate with a schoolwide Water and Bubble Day during outdoor gross motor time. Your teachers will share more details when we get closer to the date. Please note, ECE’s last day of school is June 2nd.

Kindergarten Update: In kindergarten we are starting our last unit of English Language Arts learning about American Symbols. We have been working on narrative writing and culminating the protecting the Earth unit. We are excited to start kindergarten continuation practice and transition to first grade. Continuation will be on June 3rd. More details to come.

PE Update:
In PE, we are wrapping up the year with gymnastics! We are discussing flexibility, muscle strength, and balancing as we practice using the balance beam, stretching, jumping, rolling, and rope climbing (and swinging). We will begin practicing some Field Day games as the big day approaches, May 16th. We will end our year with some fun superhero themed and summer-themed games as well. As summer approaches, please remember to have your child wear or bring close-toed shoes for their safety and comfort on days when they have PE. Thank you!

Second Annual Kindergarten Talent Show!!!
Tuesday, May 20, 2025 4:00
I am thrilled to announce the second ever SKCEE kindergarten talent show! I know we have musicians, dancers, singers, taekwondo enthusiasts, comedians, and gymnasts in this year’s class.  This is a great chance to show off your stuff and learn to be comfortable sharing yourself up on stage. Performances should be short (2-3 minutes).  Kids can perform alone, with parents or siblings, or with friends.
Performers need to practice at home.  This is a lowkey event; we won’t practice any at school.
We ask that singing be done acapella or with instrumental music in the background (no lip singing please).  Also, please be sure the song your child wishes to sing is age appropriate for a young audience.
Please send an email to me (cookie_caskie@dpsk12.net) or your child’s teacher if your child wishes to join in the fun.  Include your child’s name, teacher, any necessary equipment (for example, tumbling mats or a table).  If your child requires music in the background, include the name of the song and artist so that I can create a playlist.
If your child wants to come and support their peers by watching, we would love a big audience.  See you all soon!!  Warmly, Cookie

Power of Play!
In professional learning sessions with staff we’ve been diving more deeply into play-based learning, aligned to the Reggio Emilia approach. We’ve done some reading, reflecting, and playing as we build our skills and align our approaches to best practices in early education. Here is a link to a website with everything play from children to adults, with research, recommendations, and more. Join us in embracing play as a powerful way for our students to learn.
SKCEE PTA
We want to thank our SKCEE PTA for a record-setting Book Fair. Thanks to everyone who purchased books to support our school, and for coming to our first ever Literacy Night. We remain grateful every day for the partnership we have with our families. Read the PTA newsletter here!
